Modern forums need things like fast loading pages because a lot of people surfing the internet are not that patient, social login (Google or Facebook), dark mode (very important too), and instant notifications. I also like built-in reactions as well.

I want to see a very clean interface. If it's rough, I get bored and it kills the fun. I'm also looking for a very good notification system, easy moderation tools, and simple posting editor. There are must-haves for a forum.

This one is a balance you must learn. If your engagement is high but the forum is slow, people will leave. And if performance is good but nobody is actually posting, that's another problem right there. I always try to limit heavy plugins because those things can make the site drag.
