Ignoring trolls can reduce influence, but sometimes action is necessary. Should moderators use bans, warnings, or humor to diffuse attention? What strategies successfully discourage trolling without over-policing discussions?

I usually think the best way is to avoid engaging directly. Ignoring obvious trolls denies them the attention they seek. Moderation tools like muting, temporary suspensions, or moving threads to private areas help keep the discussion focused without rewarding disruptive behavior. Clear rules also set expectations for the community.

Trolls should not be ignored in any way in a community. This is because that is going to be like empowering them to keep on doing what they are doing because no one is going to talk to them or try to stop them doing it.
