Has Anyone Tried ‘Micro-Communities’ Inside Their Forum?

I have been reading about forums that break their audience into small micro-groups to spark closer interactions. The idea is that people feel more recognized when they are part of a smaller circle instead of a giant user pool. Has anyone experimented with this? Did it actually help conversations grow, or did it fragment activity?
